Selection, Planting and Design

Selection, planting and design with trees ensures ‘the right tree for the right place’.

Tree removal is often the legacy of unsuitable tree selection at the planting stage and may result in an unnecessary cost for the tree owner as well as the loss of green cover.

A tree that may look appealing in a plant nursery may be unsuitable for its chosen location due to a range of factors including the development and radial spread of shallow roots close to buildings, potential size at maturity, dense leaf cover and propensity to shed healthy branches synonymous with some species of Willow (Salix) for example,as part of its propagation strategy in the continuation of its species.

It must additionally be noted that the planting of any tree may be inappropriate for specific locations because of the obscuring of site lines compromising safety, overhead street lighting, views and even the desiccation of shrinkable clay soils resulting in potential subsidence of buildings. A suitable tree species selected for a suitable location should require minimal pruning works throughout the tree’s life reducing financial costs for the tree owner and health costs for the tree.
