Tree Protection Orders (TPO)

Tree Protection Orders were made under the UK Town and Country Planning Act 1990 and were updated recently in 2012. In April 2009 under section 43 of the Land, Planning & Development (Guernsey) Law 2005, TPOs came into force locally.

They are issued by the States of Guernsey Development & Planning Authority (DPA) for the purpose of protecting either individual trees, groups of trees or woodlands of significant amenity value from deliberate damage or harm.

Unlimited penalties may be enforced if regulations are not adhered to and certain pruning works to such protected trees are prohibited without prior consent by the DPA. Appropriate written permissions are provided in a sympathetic manner regarding the wishes of the client and the health and subsequent retention of the tree or if applicable, the removal of the tree altogether.
